Need Help With Antibiotics…..?

My six year old son is taking amoxicillin for a tooth infection. It’s treating the infection fine, but he’s having some pretty bad side effects. I know it’s common to get an upset stomach and diarrhea with antibiotics, but is there anything I can do to make it easier for him? Today is day five of the seven day treatment, so he doesn’t have much longer to go, but today was pretty miserable for him. He barely ate anything, spent a lot of time in the bathroom, and had stomach pain all day. Anyone have any advice?

Next time ask the doctor for a different antibiotic! They don’t all affect everyone the same way. In the meantime, call your pharmacist and ask what he can take. If your pharmacy is closed, call the nearest 24-hour pharmacy and ask.

Give him clear liquids only, no solids, no dairy until he’s off the Amoxicillin. Then start the BRAT diet for a day or two–Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. Since the source of the problem is the medicine, he should be fine a day or two after that.
