stomach pain lyme disease
Will amoxicillin work for Lyme disease? It doesn’t seem to work……?
I’ve had lyme disease since may, and I’ve gone through 3 different antibiotics. First I had doxycycline , in capsule form, but it really upset my stomach, cause I was told to take it on an empty stomach. Then, I took doxycycline tablets, this time with food, but they still upset my stomach. Now, I’ve been taking amoxicillin, but it doesn’t seem to help. I’m super back-achy, and have weird shooting pains, and muscle aches. I’ve already taken about half of my prescription for amoxicilin, but it doesn’t seem to do any good. Plus, my doc says to take 800mg of ibuprofen, but that seems like alot on my stomach. Any info on what I should do would help, thanks!
Amoxicillin is an effective treatment for Lyme disease. Not to worry there. I personally prefer doxycycline, but if it is unbearable to your stomach, than that’s obviously not an option for you. Just be sure you take all your amoxicillin pills…don’t stop cause you feel it’s “not working”. It is, trust me, my dear.
Your doctor makes me shake my head…if your stomach was upset taking doxycycline, than ibuprofen is the last thing you want to take for residual pain. A big side effect of ibuprofen is stomach upset, even with food.
You could try taking the ibuprofen with food, but it would be a good idea to also take a H2 blocker like ranitidine or cimetidine, or a proton pump inhibitor like Prilosec or Prevacid. All of these stomach relief meds can be purchased over-the-counter at your local pharmacy.
There is an NSAID out there that is easier on the stomach than others…it is called Celebrex. That would help with the pain. However, there are side-effects to that one as well, and it needs a prescription from your doc. It also could be very pricey depending on your insurance.
My suggestion would be to try the ibuprofen along with an H2 blocker…see how that works for you. And be sure to take them at a different time than your antibiotic…you don’t want to interfere with absorption of the amoxicillin.
Take care!
