stomach pain celiac
Celiac Disease and Pain Medication?
I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease. I have been suffering from EXTREME stomach pain. Like menstrual cramps X 100. My Doctor was against giving me any pain medication until she figured out what was wrong with me. Which makes total sense to me. But now that I have a disgnoses can I back to her and say HEY gimme some drugs now that I know what is wrong with me. The pain consumes nearly every waking moment. I have tried the heating pads, and the Ibuprofen. Everything I can think of. I have started my gluten free diet but don’t want to wait several weeks to “see” if that will eliminate my pain. I want something I can take when I feel like someone is ripping my spine outta my belly button. Is there anyone out there with a similar story? Will my Doctor laugh at me when I ask her for something for the pain? What do I do about it?
You should never be worried about asking your doctor for ways to relieve the pain — unless there is an issue with your medicine containing gluten (which I highly doubt), then I would ask for any assistance that I could.
On the other side of this, while it may seem like an eternity to wait for a few weeks to see if this diet change succeeds in relieving your pain, it will finally get here and you will feel better. Just be sure to strictly follow the gluten-free diet. This may seem easy at first, but there are so many hidden ingredients in packaged foods and a risk for cross-contamination in restaurants and shared kitchens with non celiacs, that it can be discouraging at first. But, with a little practice and education, you will become an expert at it.
Never be afraid to ask for help from your doctor AND never be afraid or embarrassed to ask questions about your food — you want your food to be your friend not your enemy.
Good luck.
