abdominal pain near sternum

I have a stabbing pain under my left rib cage, near the sternum. It’s where I would expect my stomach meets?

the esophasgus. It only hurts when that area gets moved by the abdominal muscles, like when I cough, sit up from a seated or laying down position, or bend down to pick something up. When it’s set off, it’s extremely painful. I went to my primary care physician, and I saw a PA. She said it was acid reflux and prescribed prevacid. It feels nothing like reflux – no burning, no travelling up the esophagus, and the prevacid does nothing for my pain. I have no digestive problems. I do have abdominal diastasis from pregnancy, and I have been coughing for the last month, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it? They checked blood and urine for bacteria and found nothing abnormal. Where do I go next for help, and can anyone give me any info?

The sternum is a bone at the top middle of your rib cage. perhaps when you cough you are straining muscles. I know if I have been exercising strenuously it can hurt like a stabbing pain when I cough. The pain you describe as shooting doesn’t sound like the pain from Gerd. (constant acid reflux ) . There are exercises that can be done to strengthen the muscles associated with the diastasis . That may help. I would try to do some of these and try to get back to your Dr and explain what you said here. that your pain has not been alleviated from the Prevacid , and ask for other options. Congrats on new baby.
