gallstone pain in abdominal left side
Left side pain underneath rib cage and up to neck!?
I have pain in my left side underneath my rib and it extends up my side, back and abdominal area into my shoulder and neck! I have gallstones and am having surgery June 24th and the horrible pain I receive from the gallstones is similar to the pain I am feeling in my left side. My liver is also enlarged, I have like no iron or vitamin D in my body either which I am taking supplements for including stool softeners. If you have any idea to why this pain may be occuring please contact me!
Thank you
This could be what is known as Portal Hypertension.
When the liver cells become damaged, the immune
system of the body will respond to this damage and
cause inflammation inside the liver, which will cause
the liver to enlarge in size. This inflammation can
lead to where the blood doesn’t flow well through
the liver anymore. It backs up into the Portal vein
and causes high pressure there, known as Portal
hypertension.
It can also back up into veins not used to carrying
this amount of blood and they can have weak spots
and balloon outward and break open. These
vessels are known as Varies. Any blood in the
sputum, vomit, or the rectal area is cause for
concern and a patient should be seen immediately
for it. The doctors can try to band these varies
and stop the bleeding. People who have Cirrhosis
of the liver, the liver isn’t able to make clotting factors
well anymore. They tend to bruise and bleed very
easily because of this.
Now, to address what may be happening to you.
This blood also backs up into the Spleen and
causes it to enlarge in size, also (Spleen is on
the left side, under the rib cage, but slightly higher
up under the rib cage than the liver is)
You should check with your doctor to see if this
might be happening to you.
Our Red blood cells have iron (heme)on them that
holds onto the oxygen molecule and transports it
throughout the body to our organs. Without
iron, it doesn’t do this efficiently. Therefore,
the patient may lack oxygen and this causes
them to become very tired. Iron is important
in our bodies in what we call a normal range.
The doctor will adjust your medication according
to your personal needs of your body, so it
will stay in this range. Too much iron, can have
an effect on the liver…so he makes sure of this
with blood testing. Vitamin D can be gotten
in sunlight, drinking milk and in foods we eat.
I hope this information has been of some help to
you.
