Can only a doctor order an abdominal ultrasound?

When I had health insurance, any time I had severe abdominal pain the doctor would order an ultrasound. That’s how I found out I had gall stones and other conditions. Now, I am self-employed and do not have insurance. I’m having pretty bad abdominal pain. Just the doctor’s appointment itself is over $100. I know that the doctor is going to talk to me for five minutes and then tell me I need to go to the imaging place to have an abdominal ultrasound. My question is…can I bypass the doctor appt. and just get an abdominal ultrasound myself? I’m thinking probably not, but just thought I’d ask.
My ‘plan’ would be to have the results sent to my doctor and I’d make an appt with them. I just don’t want to have to pay $120 twice if the first time is not really needed. I have to try to find cheaper options since I don’t have insurance.
