Pain During Sexual Intercourse

Women can experience painful intercourse for many different reasons. The medical term for this is dyspareunia and it is estimated that at least 10%, and up to 50% of women experience it. If you are one of these women, you need to know why this is happening and what you can do about it.

Vaginal moisturizers is one of such remedies that you can use for getting relief from the vaginal dryness and painful intercourse. These are easily available over the counter and gives immediate relief. However, because of their consistency and smell they are not liked by most of the women. Also these do not help in thickening the lining of the vagina and thus is not always effective in giving long time relief.

No one really knows what causes endometriosis, but they know what it is and you should too. This is a condition where the tissue that lines the uterus begins to grow in other areas such as around the fallopian tubes, bladder, ovaries and occasionally in the bowels. Or, past trauma such as date rape may be to blame. Repeat infections, such as yeast infections, or dryness during menopause uncomfortable intercourse can also cause vaginismus. Finally, treatments for gynecological cancers, such as cervical cancer, can also cause vaginal atrophy.

For instance a growth in your pelvic cavity near the uterus will cause painful periods and abdominal tenderness. You may have pain just before your period or after your period ends. If the tissue has lodged in your nose or lungs, which is rare your symptoms would be a nosebleed or coughing up blood at the same time as your menstruation.

According to the International Pelvic Pain Society, well over nine million U.S. women between 18 and 50 suffer from chronic pelvic pain at some point in their lives. An estimated 90% of those women also experience sexual pain.

The severity of vaginismus varies from woman to woman. Some are able to insert a tampon and complete a gynecological exam but are unable to insert a penis.
